The patriarchal narratives already employ the verb “to give” with respect to what God will do with the land of promise (Gen. 12:7; 13:15; 15:18; 26:3–4).22 The book of Joshua thus means to inform its readers of the fulfilment of the ancient promise,23 although a comparison of 13:1 with 11:23 indicates that the promise is only partially fulfilled.
